Founding Father Valued Courageous Disagreements

Martha MacCallum ended her Fox News program tonight with a quotation by Thomas Jefferson.

STOP FOR A MINUTE — Does the fact that this quotation comes from a host on Fox News stop you from reading any further or invite you to do so. If it came from MSNBC, would you want to read further? Realize how the sources of information calls us to select information from our own team–liberal or conservative!

Should we not be able to listen beyond our biases. Sometimes President Obama was right and made a wise decision. Sometimes President Trump will do something that otherwise you might be able to support.

The most difficult things to do are to compliment an enemy and to disagree with someone you respect. Both are important in a civil society.

OK, you want the Thomas Jefferson quotation–“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.”

Should that not be so? Too many of my friends have different views on politics and religion to shut them out of my life.
